Dat lees ik net bij Slashdot.Larry Sanger, mede oprichter van Wikipedia heeft dit gisteren in Berlijn bekend gemaakt.
Citizendium gaat binnen enkele weken van start. Larry Sanger rechtvaardigt zijn beslissing als volgt:
"We believe a fork is necessary, and justified, both to allow people a place to work under the direction of experts, and in which personal accountability--including the use of real names--is expected. In short, we want to create a responsible community and a good global citizen."
Hij introduceert daarbij het progressive fork model:
"A "progressive fork" works like this: we will begin with all of Wikipedia's articles, so that the Citizendium will begin as, simply, a mirror of Wikipedia. Then people start making changes to articles in the Citizendium. On a very regular basis, we will refresh our copies of Wikipedia articles. If an entry in the Citizendium has never changed since being copied from Wikipedia, but the Wikipedia version has, then we upload the most recent Wikipedia article. But if the Citizendium has changed an article, then it is not refreshed. Tools will no doubt be written that will allow users to compare the differences between the Wikipedia article and the Citizendium article side-by-side. In addition, of course, people will be able to start brand new articles on topics Wikipedia has not yet covered."
Wezenlijk verschil met Wikipedia zal dus zijn dat er niet anoniem aan kan worden bijgedragen en dat er experts worden ingezet in plats van "amateurs".
Ik ben heel benieuwd wat hier vanaf nu allemaal over geschreven gaat worden, en behalve dat, natuurlijk ook of Citizendium op termijn inderdaad zoveel beter wordt dan Wikipedia zelf. Voor het onderwijs zou dit betekenen dat informatie nóg betrouwbaarder gaat worden.
Meer informatie staat hier. (in het Duits) Overigens is op Wikipedia zelf al een pagina te vinden over Citizendium en wordt het begrip "fork" goed uitgelegd (ik kende het niet).
Opvallend is dat op de pagina over Larry Sanger staat: "The neutrality of this article is disputed."
